Call 101 : MISSING YOU

Hello Son,

Today is Christmas Day. :D

We went to Church this morning. The mass was at 11:30am but we arrived, ah ... fashionably late. We left the house the normal time, 15 minutes before, but today, there was a massive jam on the road.

We ended up sitting outside the Church.

On the right side.

The Church was packed today. Inside full, outside, left and right wing all full. There must be more than a thousand people that morning.

Let's see ...

Inside the Church, there are 4 rows of 50 bench-pews.

50 bench-pews X 4 rows = 200 pews

One pew can accommodate about 6 - 8 people.

Which means, inside the Church alone, there were about 1200 to 1600 people already. Not counting people outside.

Did You see the crowd?

We must have been like a DOT to You from up there.

We were seated outside in a row.

From left :

Aunty Diana, Aunty Carol, Justine, Mom and Dad.

(Grandma attended an earlier mass - none of us could get up then. :D)

The Priest was saying the homily ...

Mom was wondering what would be the message for us today.

Shortly after, Dad whispered,

"You heard what the Father said?"

Guiltily, Mom shook her head.

No, she must confess she didn't hear.

She wasn't listening.

Must be some kind of attention deficit disorder that she's only realising now. This is definitely not the first time her attention had strayed. She did try to listen attentively, but after the first two lines, the words became a blur ...

A definite disorder of some kind.

Beyond her control. Not her fault.

"Why, what did he say?" Mom whispered back.

Dad replied,

"WE ARE MADE FOR GOD, AND WE WILL RETURN TO GOD."

That's a nice message for today, Mom thought.

You must have whispered to Dad to summarize Father's message for today.

We are made for God, and we will return to God.

Hmmm ... somehow that felt somewhat comforting ...

You are made for God, and You have returned to Him.

Having said that, Mom cannot help but wish You could have delayed your - flight, You know ...

We miss You so very much. :(

Your mother's thoughts were interrupted during Collection time. Her antennae had picked up a signal which caused her eyes to scan through the people in front. She spotted a man whom she recognized instantly. He was doing Collection on our side.

Zzzza--PPPP !!!

This man, on a few occasions, had commented to your parents that :

"Your son is a handsome boy ..."

"Very handsome, your son ..."

"He'll grow up to be a handsome boy ..."

You were in preschool then. Your parents could never forget this stranger even if they tried. Dad remembers him too.

We had attended another church when You were 7, and You had served there as an Altar Boy until Jesus called You home on Jan 21, 2010, at the age of 15.

So, we have not seen this man since, and neither has he seen us. Even if he were to see your handsome face in the papers, I - Made - It - To - Heaven page, he probably would not have any flashback, or make any connection. It was after all, some 8 to 10 years ago.

Memories flooded back ...

There was a dull, nagging ache in your mother's chest. God planted this man somewhere earlier on in our lives, so that a connection could be felt later on. She's sure of that. There's always a reason for everything.

Yes, everything ...

Like now ...

Boy, does your mother feel THE BOND right at that moment.

Isn't it funny that he should be the one doing Collection on our side of the Church, that your parents have to see him, and instantly think of You? We could have been sitting anywhere. Had there been no jam this morning, we would have been early, and we would be seated in the Church. We would not have seen him then. There would have been no ZAP.

Pause.

No ZAP on Christmas Day???

Seriously???

You gotta be kiddin'.

Of course, there'd be a ZAP on Christmas Day. :D

Anyway ...

There was no eye contact, as a result of commendable efforts by your mother, when he offered the Collection bag at our row. Hence, no acknowledgment.

Chicken ...

You must have laughed, when You saw your mother avoiding his eyes.

She has to ... had to ... what if he recognized her and later ask,

Hi, where's your handsome son???

Oh Lord ... Not today.

She didn't feel like she was up to giving any explanation today. The WHY and the WHAT HAPPENED would surely follow right after her explanation that You had uh, migrated, to live with Jesus and Mama Mary etc.

A recent example is, our old neighbour from the previous condo we used to live in. Mom bumped into him one day at the shops, and he had asked in greeting,

"How's Bryan? How's your girl? And Your son? He must be very tall by now ..." he lifted his arm right up to indicate how tall.

Mom had smiled, but offered no explanation.

Instead, she had replied with a robotic smile,

"They are okay ..."

Which You guys are, she felt.

It sure wasn't a lie.

Your mother just refrained from telling the truth. There is a fine line between the two. God will understand. He knows she would say that line, even before she said it. Why, God knows her better than she knows herself ...

During Communion, the man was standing right in front, about 5 rows of chairs away from us. He was standing beside the person who was giving out the communion hosts. We had to walk up to him, following the queue to the front ...

Eyes downcast, head bowed ...

Chicken, Mom ...

Your mother could almost hear You say.

Mass ended.

We were in the car heading towards home. Half way home, Mom turned on the radio. A song was coming to an end, and the next song that came on was, would You believe it :

I'll Be Missing You.

Gee, what a conciDANS. :D

I'll be missing You ...

OMG ...

It could have been any song that could have been totally unconnected ... but no, it had to be a song that would cause ZAP ZAP ZAP to happen in the car. :D

The time was 1:20pm.

Every step I take

Every move I make

Every single day

Every time I pray

I'll be missing You

Thinking of the day

When You went away

What a life to take

What a bond to break

Call 100 : CHRISTMAS EVE

Hello Son,

The table is set for dinner.
It's Dad's birthday on Christmas Eve.
We are thinking of You having
your very first birthday bash in Heaven.

Dad cooked his famous lamb curry with pilau rice,
whilst Mom made a side salad and the roast chicken.

1. ROAST CHICKEN

The lotus root soup with ribs is totally awesome!
Will post the link to the food blog when the entries are published.

Trust Aunty Diana to climb to such heights
to take a good shot. :D

Aunty Diana with Justine.

Happy Birthday Daniel! :D

We all miss your hmmm-mmm-mmm
during dinner.

The Santa Rinas ...

Dear Jesus, bless the food
and make it good, for our bodies ...

Thank You for watching over us, Son. <3

Dad is carving the roast chicken.

Bet You're having an awesome feast in Heaven. :D

Today we eat, Tomorrow we diet. :D

Dinner is just not the same.
We all miss You so very much.

Aunty Hayley and Grandma say,
Happy Birthday, Daniel! :D

Aunty Pauline says Hi.

We feel You with us, Son ... :D
Everywhere we are, there You'll be.
This morning a Zzzza-PPP thing happened.
Will write in Call 99 in a bit.

Cheers! Happy Birthday Dad and
Happy Birthday Daniel.
We are having sparkling juice over here.
Wonder what You're having up there ... :D

After dinner, Justine and Dad entertain us with
some songs. Justine is playing on your electric guitar.
Dad hooks up the guitar on the amplifier
and they made a lot of noise. Did You hear them? :D

Justine and Aunty Carol baked this
cheese cake for Dad the day before.
See the little one on the right?
That's Yours ... :D

After singing the Happy Birthday song to Dad,
we all sang to You too. :D

Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas rush is through
But I still have one wish to make
A special one for you

Merry Christmas darling
We're apart that's true
But I can dream and in my dreams
I'm Christmas-ing with you

Holidays are joyful
There's always something new
But every day's a holiday
When I'm near to you
The lights on my tree
I wish you could see
I wish it every day
Logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say

That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year, too
I've just one wish
On this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you

[Instrumental Interlude]

Logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year, too
I've just one wish
On this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you
I wish I were with you
Aunty Carol is cutting the cake.
Those lil round balls are blackcurrants.
A much healthier choice than jam.

This one's for You ... :D

Dad really likes the cheese cake ...

Justine's and Aunty Carol's
first attempt to bake cheese cake ...

The cake is a hit. :D
The texture is super smooth and creamy.
The biscuit-base at the bottom is
really nice and crunchy.

Dad says it's better than Secret Recipe. :D
Yes, it's true. It really is very very good.

We are enjoying the cake here.

"I've just one wish,

on this Christmas Eve,

I wish I were with You ..."

Hugs & Kisses

from all at home. <3

Call 99 : FIRST MAID

Hello Son,                                 (continue from Call 98) (Friday, Dec 24)

Today is your birthday. :D

First thing in the morning, on Christmas Eve, You made your presence felt. :D

Mom was writing on the blog and telling You about the CHRISTMAS CARD inciDAN (Call 94) ...

How Grandma has been trying to find our old maid Valli, who left us some 16 years ago, and out of the blues, Valli sent a Christmas card with her telephone number ...

In that Call 94, Mom had said to You, "to thank the someone up there" for whispering to Valli to get in touch with Grandma.

In fact, as Mom was writing that line down, she had felt kinda uneasy, to the point of feeling guilty, because that would be the first time, she did not connect an unusual inciDAN to You.

She had written "Thanks Son" at first ...

... but as she read back, she decided to delete the line because Grandma had said, several times that night at the restaurant that,

"Someone up there really knows what's going on ..."

So your mother was thinking ...

Yup, thinking ...

A dangerous time ...

A time when she tries to add two and two to get 5.

She had thought, okay ... let's not be thick-skinned, it can't be DANIEL every - single - time an unexplained inciDAN happens, right?

So she deleted her line, "Thanks Son" and wrote instead,

"Will You do us a favour and say THANK YOU

to the someone up there?"

With that, she posted the Call 94 : CHRISTMAS CARD this morning on your birthday (Christmas Eve 24th). Although the Call was dated Tuesday, Dec 21, that entry was published only this morning.

Then, she proceeded to write the next Call 95 : Ice Cream

Mom  knows she's a little behind in the calls. There's just so much to tell You, and every day, there's been an inciDAN. Just that, there was no time to make calls as we were out of the house most of the time with your aunties ... Christmas shopping, wedding preparation etc ... but not to worry because your mother keeps a journal, so that she doesn't forget the details. :D

Anyway ...

About 10 to 15 minutes after she had posted Call 94 : CHRISTMAS CARD, "thanking someone up there," a text message came for Dad.

Mom heard the beep, but didn't pay much attention to it.

She continued writing her Call 95.

Dad exclaimed, "Eh, it's from Erna ..."

Erna???

Erna - Your first maid???

Erna was your maid since the day You were born. She took care of You (and Justine) until You were about 5 years old. She left us and went to work in Hong Kong. The first two years, she had kept in contact. She would call on your birthday or send a card, but after that we have not heard from her.

Until the day You left us in January 21st this year.

She had been working in Hong Kong all these years, but her employers were transferred to KL sometime in October 2009, 3 months before You left. We were not aware of that she was in KL, as she did not contact us. However, our present maid then, Gina, had told Erna about You departing for Heaven, and both of them had attended your Farewell Mass.

Imagine ...

Erna, your first maid, took care of You for 5 years, went to Hong Kong and worked there for 10 years, and yet, when You left, she was somehow in KL and was able to see You off. So meant to be ...

Erna was a good very maid and loved You and Justine very much. Mom still remembers the day we had to send her to the airport. She was sobbing away in the car. You were on her lap, and leaning against her chest. Both of You were looking out of the window. Your face was all solemn. Justine was sitting quietly.

At the immigration, as she took the lift down, we watched her walk to the passport counters. As she was walking away, and her figure was becoming distant,

You had yelled loudly ...

AUN-TY   ER-NAaaaaaaaa !!!

She heard You and she turned back. You called out again.

AUN-TY   ER-NAaaaaaaaa !!!

You waved your lil hands wildly at her, and she waved back. Oh gawd, thinking about that incident just made the eyes all misty.

That was your first time saying Goodbye to someone who was really close to You, sending her away, and knowing that we would probably never see her again.  Even at the tender age of 5, You understood and were able to feel the pain of a permanent separation.

Your first maid.

Who would have known that 10 years later, despite absolutely no-contact with your maid, she would appear at your Farewell Mass and see You off. That was quite an emotional moment for your parents when we saw her at your Farewell.

Dad read out Erna's text message :

"Hi sir bryan, may yr birthday be merry and bright and i hope u all have a nice xmas. may God bless u & yr family with lots of good fortune. all the best for 2011. best wishes, erna."

Dad and Mom were so surprised to hear from Erna. After we saw her at your Farewell there had not been any more contact.

It was awfully strange that, right after Mom wrote the entry on Call 94 : Christmas Card, about Grandma's maid who suddenly contacted us, and Mom had asked You "to thank the someone up there ..." that this text message came in.

From your first maid.

Mom had to smile to herself.

She said to Dad, "He's telling me it's not just a someone up there. It was him." :D

Dad could only nod.

Another coinciDANS. :D

Can't be explained ...

It's just an understanding between a mother and son.

Thanks Son ... Mom knew it was You all the time.

It wasn't just a "someone up there.":D

It was You ...

Wink!

Love You so much.<3
